The Kentucky State Poker Championship is produced as a charity fundraiser by the LaGrange Rotary Club (Foundation), the leading community service organization in Oldham County, Kentucky.
The Foundation has a demonstrated track record for producing several high quality poker events. Attendance has been nearly 300 with pay-outs of $20,000 per event. Our poker tournaments are recognized as the largest and most successful poker events in the State of Kentucky (Source: Kentucky Office of Charitable Gaming).
In 2006, The Foundation made substantial improvements by renaming its tournament, creating a satellite tournament structure, committing 100% of the buy-ins to the prize pool, and reaching an agreement with the WSOP.
The Foundation entered into a trademark licensing agreement with Harrah's to conduct a World Series of Poker (WSOP) Satellite Tournament and award the winner a seat at the 2007 WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas.
The WSOP is the largest poker tournament in the world. The 2006 event attracted 8,773 players and awarded prizes totaling $82,466,200 - $12 million to the winner.
The Foundation developed a Satellite tournament structure whereby other charity poker tournaments in Kentucky could buy a seat at the Kentucky State Poker Championship (KSPC) and award it to the winner of their local event, thus giving players throughout Kentucky a shot at the WSOP.
100% of the proceeds from the KSPC are donated to other charities, including the YMCA, Boy Scouts, and numerous worthwhile causes.
The Rotary Club Foundation is governed by five directors: Herb Head, Mark Haertzen, Mike Meurer, Neil Abney, Garret Ackles, and Mark Haertzen.
